"Get Action" and help rebuild Eastern Market
Folks, as you may know, Eastern Market, one of DC's most beloved landmarks, was gutted by a fire a few days ago. Well, some community activists here in the Districts, led by Clay Johnson from Blue State Digital, have come up with a hella creative idea -- they've gotten a slew of bars here in DC to agree to donate a portion of proceeds on May 8th to help with the rebuild effort. Here at ActForLove.org, we're not just spreading the word, we're going to put our money where our modem is as well.
Between now and May 9th, ActForLove.org will donate all net revenue to this cause. So if you've been wanting to check out the online dating pool but have been too embarrassed, here's your excuse, okay? (think of it as not a "cause for action" but "action for a cause").
By the way, for everyone who is not in DC, Eastern Market is a very big deal here, and a big part of the community. This isn't just some mini mall or one of those faux "local markets" for tourists where they sell cheap trinkets and beads and velvet Elvis posters. I mean, yeah, there's *some* of that, but the vast majority of it is a real genuine market that real people go to, shop at, sell at, etc.
This is the place where people buy cheese, meat, fruit, etc. It's also a place where people hang out, meet each other, and have a small town experience in the middle of the city. It's very much the heart of this section of DC, as well. For anyone who's ever whined or kvetched about chains, the disappearance of main street, etc. -- you would love this place. This is the real DC -- the city -- as opposed to the metaphorical "DC" where Congresscritters come to "feed." For a whole host of reasons, it is critical that this market get rebuilt as soon as possible.
This is a great cause, and for anyone who wants to "act locally," here's your chance. And if anyone else has any kind of business, and can get on board with this, I’d urge you to do so.
